The Senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing growing insecurity and hardship faced by his constituents.

Lamido announced his resignation in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, stating that the decision takes immediate effect.

“I, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing the good people of Sokoto East Senatorial District, hereby resign from the APC with immediate effect,” he wrote.

The lawmaker explained that his decision was driven by the party’s inability to adequately address security challenges and protect lives and property in his constituency.

“My decision is based on the party’s failure to safeguard the people I represent and the hardship currently being faced by them. This defection is primarily in the interest of the people I represent,” he added.

Lamido, however, did not disclose his next political move or whether he intends to join another party.

Speaking earlier with journalists in Sokoto, the senator lamented the persistent wave of banditry and violence in Sokoto East, noting that several communities have been overrun, with residents displaced and livelihoods destroyed.

“My people are enduring untold hardship. Bandits have destroyed entire communities, and I cannot remain in a system that has failed to demonstrate sufficient commitment to resolving this crisis,” he said.

He revealed that repeated efforts to draw federal attention to the worsening insecurity had yielded little results, prompting consultations with stakeholders, political associates, and community leaders, which culminated in the decision to leave the ruling party.

Lamido stressed that the primary responsibility of government is the protection of lives and property, urging authorities to intensify efforts to combat banditry and restore peace across Sokoto State and other affected northern regions.

He warned that continued inaction could worsen the humanitarian situation in the region.
