Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) has temporarily moved its plenary sessions to the old Assembly complex located within the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs on Wellington Bassey Way, near the Government House in Uyo.
The decision followed a motion moved by the Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Effiong Johnson, during Tuesday’s plenary and supported by Dr. Nsidibe Akata of Eket State Constituency.
The relocation was necessitated by ongoing reconstruction works at the main Assembly complex along Udo Udoma Avenue.
Lawmakers expressed concerns that the current construction site was unsafe for both legislators and the public.
In his address, Speaker Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong commended members for their dedication, assuring that the temporary chamber would be used solely for plenary sittings, while administrative functions would continue at the Assembly’s temporary office at Luton Park Hotel, Uyo.
Meanwhile, the Assembly announced the appointment of Mrs. Yingi Effiong Edunam, former Director of Administration, as the new Deputy Clerk.
Speaker Otong congratulated her, urging Assembly staff to support her in her new role.
Mrs. Edunam, a native of Urue Offong Oruko LGA, expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged to work collaboratively with colleagues in a spirit of harmony.
