Minister-designate of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, on Monday arrived at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, ahead of his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu.

Eyewitnesses at the Villa observed that Oyedele, accompanied by his wife, was cleared by security officials at about 2:09p.m. The nominee was dressed in a navy blue suit, while his wife appeared in white traditional attire.

The ceremony comes five days after the Senate confirmed his nomination and about 13 days after President Tinubu first forwarded his name for the ministerial position.

The Senate had on March 12 approved Oyedele’s appointment through a voice vote following a screening session that lasted more than two hours. Senate President Godswill Akpabio subsequently announced the confirmation after lawmakers adopted the recommendation of the Committee of the Whole.

President Tinubu had earlier transmitted Oyedele’s nomination to the upper chamber in a letter dated March 3, seeking confirmation in line with Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution.

Oyedele, who hails from Ikaram in Akoko, Ondo State, brings over two decades of experience in fiscal policy and tax administration to the role.

Before his nomination, he served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, which initiated major reforms in Nigeria’s tax system.

The committee developed four executive bills aimed at consolidating numerous taxes into fewer statutes and introducing key measures, including tax relief for low-income earners.

The bills covering taxation, tax administration, revenue service reforms and the establishment of a joint revenue board – were eventually passed by the National Assembly in 2025 after extensive deliberations.

Observers say Oyedele’s appointment is expected to strengthen ongoing fiscal reforms, enhance revenue administration in the country.
