Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Friday presented certificates of recognition to six newly elected traditional rulers, reaffirming the role of traditional institutions in fostering peace, unity and development across the state.
The presentation ceremony, held at the Light House in Awka, underscored the state government’s commitment to strengthening traditional leadership for grassroots development.
Addressing the monarchs, Soludo urged them to prioritise good governance, the welfare of their people and harmony within their communities. He noted that the office of the traditional ruler is rooted in town union constitutions, which clearly define their responsibilities.
“The monarchs are expected to abide by the constitutions of their respective communities to avoid the usual issues that arise between traditional rulers and presidents-general,” he said, charging them to be fathers to all and serve as beacons of unity.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, described the new rulers as “tested and trusted,” expressing optimism that their emergence would reduce rancour and strengthen peace in their communities. He also pledged the council’s support.
The recognized monarchs are Igwe Justice Samuel Okoye of Azigbo (Nnewi South LGA); Igwe Clement Onwuka of Isulo (Orumba South LGA); Igwe Uche Okonkwo of Amawbia (Awka South LGA); Igwe Benson Madubuko of Adazi-Ani (Anaocha LGA); Igwe Ejike Ugoagbala of Ora-Eri (Aguata LGA); and Igwe Ben Okekeifi of Ndiowu (Orumba North LGA).
