Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has inaugurated the State Building Planning and Development Control Taskforce to enforce compliance with building regulations, promote orderly urban development across the state.
Represented by his deputy, Peter Odey, the Governor charged the task force to carry out its duties with professionalism, integrity, and fairness. He emphasized the importance of curbing unapproved constructions, ensuring safety standards, and supporting sustainable urban growth.
“This task force is critical to curbing unapproved constructions, enforcing planning laws, and promoting sustainable urban development across the state. Therefore, you must discharge your duties with professionalism, fairness, and integrity,” Otu said. He urged residents and developers to adhere strictly to approved building plans and planning guidelines.
The Governor also stressed that the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to urban renewal and the protection of lives and property, while advising the task force not to victimise any citizen. Collaboration with relevant ministries, agencies, and local governments was highlighted as essential for effective enforcement and public awareness.
Dr. Bong Duke, CEO and Vice Chairman of the State Planning Commission, noted that the task force was carefully selected to monitor, guide, and regulate building development in both urban and rural areas. He decried the prevalence of indiscriminate construction, poor planning, and non-adherence to approved designs.
Chairman of the task force, Akiba Ekpenyong, thanked the Governor for the confidence placed in them and assured that the team would diligently fulfill its mandate, supporting the vision of a well-planned, safe, and sustainable Cross River State.
