Ali Larijani, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council, is expected to visit Oman on Tuesday, following recent indirect talks between the United States and Iran.

According to Iran’s semi official Tasnim news agency, Larijani will hold meetings with senior officials of the Sultanate of Oman to discuss regional and international developments, as well as bilateral cooperation between both countries.

The visit comes after US and Iranian officials held indirect discussions in Oman last week, with Muscat acting as a mediator. The talks were aimed at easing tensions and reviving diplomatic engagement amid a growing US naval presence near Iran and Tehran’s warnings of a strong response to any attack.

Tasnim reported that discussions during Larijani’s visit would cover a wide range of issues, although the date and venue for the next round of US-Iran talks have not yet been announced.

Iran and the United States held five rounds of negotiations last year, focused on Tehran’s nuclear programme, however, the process stalled over disagreements on uranium enrichment inside Iran. Tensions escalated further in June when the United States attacked Iranian nuclear facilities at the end of a 12 day Israeli bombing campaign.

Tehran has since said it has halted uranium enrichment activities, which Washington considers a potential pathway to developing nuclear weapons. Iran, however, maintains that its nuclear programme is strictly for peaceful purposes.

The United States has also pushed for Iran’s ballistic missile programme to be included in negotiations, a demand Tehran has repeatedly rejected.

Larijani has held several influential positions under Khamenei over the years, including serving as Speaker of Parliament and as Iran’s chief negotiator in earlier nuclear talks with world powers.

In a televised address on Monday, Ayatollah Khamenei urged Iranians to turn out in large numbers for events marking the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, scheduled for Wednesday.

He said public participation would demonstrate loyalty to the Islamic Republic and deter what he described as hostile intentions against Iran.
