The political tension in Rivers State appears to be easing following a late night intervention by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

President Tinubu reportedly met behind closed doors with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and other influential political leaders from the state in an effort to calm the prolonged crisis.

While official details of the meeting were not disclosed, sources cited by The Nation said Governor Fubara accompanied Wike to his residence in Guzape, Abuja, shortly after the discussions, a move widely seen as a signal of reconciliation.

The Rivers political crisis has pitted Governor Fubara against his predecessor and political benefactor, Wike, triggering months of tension within the state’s political structure and raising concerns about governance and stability.

According to reports, Governor Fubara allegedly appealed directly to Wike during the meeting, pledging to maintain respect and avoid further confrontation. The gesture is believed to have played a key role in easing hostilities between the two power blocs.

Political observers say President Tinubu’s intervention underscores growing concern at the federal level over the impact of the Rivers crisis on national political stability, particularly as alignments ahead of future elections begin to take shape.

Neither the Presidency nor the parties involved have issued an official statement on the outcome of the talks. However, insiders say further consultations are expected in the coming days to consolidate peace and prevent a resurgence of the conflict.

For now, the Abuja meeting has raised cautious optimism that the long running feud may be heading toward a political settlement.
