The Nigerian Correctional Service, Yobe State Command, has successfully concluded the first phase of its Digital Literacy Programme for inmates, marking a significant step in rehabilitation efforts through technology-driven education.

The programme, held at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum, saw 30 inmates complete foundational training in essential digital competencies.

Participants were equipped with practical knowledge in computer operations, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and graphic design skills aimed at improving their reintegration prospects upon release.

Following the completion of the initial phase, authorities also announced the launch of the programme’s second module, signaling continuity and expansion of the initiative.

The digital literacy project is supported by the Yobe State Government under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni. Implementation is being carried out in collaboration with the Yobe State Information Technology Development Agency, which provided the custodial centre with computers and other digital tools necessary for the training.

Speaking on the development, YITDA Director-General, Dr. Adam Kachalla Mohammad, described the completion of Module One as a “major step towards digital inclusion in the state.” He emphasized that extending digital access to correctional facilities reflects a broader commitment to inclusive development and capacity building.

According to him, the initiative aligns with ongoing reforms within Nigeria’s correctional system, which increasingly prioritize rehabilitation, education, and skills acquisition as critical components of inmate reformation.

Officials say the next phase of the programme will deepen participants’ digital capabilities, further preparing them for productive engagement in a technology-driven society after serving their sentences.
