The National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, has resigned his membership of the party, citing ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Johnson’s resignation, contained in a letter dated May 4, 2026, was addressed to the Chairman of NNPP Ward G1 (Shitta/Ogunlana Ward) in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State and takes immediate effect.

In the letter, Johnson said his decision was driven by the need for a broader opposition coalition to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic space.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), effective immediately,” he stated.

He expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve in various capacities, including as National Auditor and later National Publicity Secretary.

“It has been a distinct honour to serve our party at the highest levels. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have contributed my quota to our collective vision,” he added.

Johnson also thanked members of the National Working Committee (NWC) for their support during his tenure, describing his experience as rewarding.

Explaining his decision, he said the current political climate required opposition forces to work together under a unified platform.

“This decision stems from my conviction that the current political climate necessitates a broader national realignment of the opposition,” he said.

Although Johnson did not disclose his next political move, sources within the NNPP indicated he is likely to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside supporters of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

According to party insiders, Johnson’s political future may align with the Kwankwasiyya movement, given his previous working relationship with Kwankwaso during his time in the NNPP.

One source said discussions were ongoing to integrate him into the emerging party structure.

“He has been a strong asset to Kwankwaso’s political camp. There are plans for him to either strengthen the publicity structure of the new party or coordinate activities in the South-West,” the source said.

Johnson’s resignation comes amid a wave of political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, following the reported movement of key political figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, into the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of 2027.
