Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has urged residents to reject violence and other actions capable of threatening peace and stability as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

Yusuf appealed on Thursday during an address marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium in Kano.

The governor called for unity, mutual respect and responsible citizenship, saying a peaceful environment remained important for economic activity and development.

“As the 2027 General Election is fast approaching, I also appeal to you all to continue to uphold peace, unity, and mutual respect. Let us shun violence and anything that may threaten the peace and stability of our dear state,” Yusuf said.

He also called for prayers for peaceful, free, fair and credible elections in 2027 and urged residents to reject violence, division, intolerance and criminality.

The governor commended security agencies for their efforts in protecting lives and property and said his administration would continue strengthening cooperation with security formations operating across the state.

According to Yusuf, the state government has provided logistics and operational support to the military, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Department of State Services, particularly in areas facing security challenges.

He identified Tsanyawa, Ghar, Gwarzo, Shanono, Bagwai, Rogo, Kiru/Bebeji, Karaye and Tudun Wada/Doguwa among areas receiving increased security attention.

Yusuf said the measures were intended to protect communities, restore public confidence and enable residents affected by insecurity to return to farming and other economic activities.

The governor also highlighted his administration’s efforts against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, including the establishment of the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

On economic empowerment, Yusuf said the government had provided start-up capital, livestock, vocational training and other forms of support to residents as part of programmes aimed at strengthening livelihoods.

He said his administration remained focused on education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, water supply, security and human capital development.

Yusuf also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its support for infrastructure, security and other development initiatives in Kano.

He urged residents to use the Independence anniversary to renew their commitment to peace, unity and responsible citizenship.
