Some leaders of the All Progressives Congress are reportedly considering alternative political options ahead of the 2027 presidential election as tensions deepen between some APC governors and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his Rainbow Coalition.
Party sources, who spoke anonymously, claimed that disagreements surrounding Wike’s political activities had generated concern among some APC stakeholders, particularly following his public exchanges with Governors Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.
The sources alleged that some party figures were considering their options, including the possibility of withholding support from President Bola Tinubu or supporting another presidential candidate if the disagreement remained unresolved.
No governor publicly identified in the dispute has announced a decision to support another presidential candidate against Tinubu.
WIKE, APC GOVERNORS CLASH OVER RAINBOW COALITION
The disagreement centres on Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, a cross-party political arrangement supporting Tinubu’s 2027 re-election while allowing politicians to pursue other elective positions outside the APC.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party serving in the APC-led Federal Government, has maintained that his support for Tinubu does not extend automatically to APC candidates contesting other positions.
APC governors have taken a different position.
The Progressive Governors’ Forum, chaired by Uzodimma, recently resolved that its members would not participate in or support political arrangements they believe could undermine Tinubu’s re-election, weaken the APC or adversely affect the party’s candidates.
The governors said their campaign commitment would be to Tinubu and APC candidates at all levels.
Wike subsequently rejected suggestions that his coalition was working against the President, maintaining that politicians could support Tinubu while contesting other elections on different political platforms.
He has also argued that opposition to the coalition is connected to political interests surrounding the National Assembly and other elective positions, an allegation disputed by those opposed to the arrangement.
PARTY SOURCES LOOK TO TINUBU
Against the backdrop of the disagreement, an APC source claimed some governors and other party stakeholders were examining their political options.
“Many of them are looking at alternatives,” the source said, alleging that continued confrontation could eventually affect support for Tinubu within sections of the party.
Another party source said some APC leaders were waiting for the President to intervene before the disagreement escalated further.
According to the source, the APC National Working Committee may have limited room to resolve the dispute without presidential involvement because of the political interests surrounding it.
The assertions represent the accounts of unnamed party figures and do not constitute an official position of the APC or its governors.
FORMER APC OFFICIAL EXPECTS BROADER ALLIANCE
Former APC Organising Secretary Eze Duru, however, offered a different assessment, arguing that Tinubu’s political strategy involves attracting support beyond the ruling party.
Duru said the President would require support from APC governors and members as well as politicians belonging to other parties as he seeks another term in 2027.
He pointed to the inclusion of politicians from different political backgrounds in the administration and described Wike’s support as part of the broader coalition surrounding the President.
“We have always known that Mr Wike has committed himself to supporting the President, and we will require all such support,” Duru said.
He maintained that governors and other political groups supporting Tinubu could ultimately be brought together despite their present disagreements.
For now, the Progressive Governors’ Forum remains publicly committed to Tinubu and APC candidates, while Wike continues to promote a cross-party coalition focused on the President’s re-election.
Claims that individual governors could eventually support another presidential candidate remain unconfirmed, with no affected governor publicly announcing such a move.
