US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy after sharing a map on social media that appeared to depict Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico and the Caribbean as part of the United States.
Trump posted the map on his Truth Social account on Monday without an accompanying explanation. The territories were shown in colours bearing the US flag, while the entire area was labelled “United States of America.”
The post was the latest in a series of provocative territorial images shared by the president, amid a flurry of nearly 100 postLabourr the Labor Day weekend.
Iceland reacted strongly to the map on Tuesday, summoning the US ambassador to protest what it described as an inappropriate depiction of the country.
Icelandic authorities said the map was “wholly inappropriate” and used the diplomatic engagement to reaffirm the country’s position regarding its territorial sovereignty.
Trump’s latest post has also renewed concerns among Canada and other countries over his repeated suggestions about expanding US territory.
The US president has previously insisted that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.
Trump also shared a cartoon showing him playing an ice hockey match against Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
In the image, Carney is shown lying on the ice while Trump tells him: “Get up, governor.”
The post came amid continuing trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa, with retaliatory Canadian tariffs on billions of dollars worth of US goods taking effect on Tuesday.
Trump’s social media activity over the holiday weekend was unusually intense. According to an AFP count, he published about 60 posts on Sunday and another 37 within 10 hours on Monday.
Some of the posts were reportedly produced with the assistance of artificial intelligence.
In another image shared by Trump, he was depicted receiving former US President George Washington in the Oval Office, adding to the series of unusual and politically provocative posts from the president.
