Two Nigerian Taekwondo Grand Masters, Sunday Koffi Akani and Dominic Asuquo Bassey, have received international recognition from the World Taekwondo Jidokwan Federation during an emotional ceremony held at the ongoing Nigeria Taekwondo Federation National Open Trials in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The duo were decorated for attaining the prestigious 7th Dan rank during an event held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, shortly after the Kukkiwon Dan Grading Test.

Speaking at the ceremony, the World Taekwondo Federation representative and President of the World Taekwondo Masters Union, Grand Master Kim Lee, described both recipients as symbols of dedication and commitment to the growth of Taekwondo.
According to him, the honour was in recognition of their years of sacrifices and contributions to the development of the sport from its early stages.
A visibly emotional Grand Master Akani said the moment held deep personal significance, noting that the recognition came after 54 years of service to Taekwondo.
He said receiving the award while still alive made the occasion more meaningful, adding that he remains actively involved in training athletes at Ikoyi Club in Lagos.
Akani also expressed gratitude to supporters, particularly the President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Grand Master Tayo Popoola, for efforts aimed at developing the sport.
He further advised younger practitioners to focus more on commitment and hard work rather than financial rewards, stressing that genuine dedication would eventually lead to success.

The recognition ceremony emerged as one of the major highlights of the ongoing National Open Trials, which continues to showcase emerging Taekwondo talents across Nigeria.
