Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has attributed his political disagreement with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and some governors of the All Progressives Congress to his appointment as FCT minister and disagreements over political arrangements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the claims during an interview on Tuesday while responding to the decision of the Progressive Governors Forum, chaired by Uzodimma, not to support his proposed “Rainbow Coalition.”
The former Rivers State governor alleged that some APC governors had been uncomfortable with his appointment as FCT minister since President Bola Tinubu constituted his cabinet.
He further accused some of the governors of intervening in his political disagreement with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and misleading the governor during the crisis.
According to Wike, some APC governors received political support from Fubara but were ultimately unable to secure a second-term ticket for him.
Wike did not provide evidence during the interview to substantiate the allegation that the governors received money or other support from Fubara.
WIKE QUESTIONS UZODIMMA’S 2023 RECORD
Wike also questioned Uzodimma’s opposition to his cross-party political arrangement, pointing to the performance of the APC in the South-East during the 2023 presidential election.
He argued that President Tinubu performed poorly in Imo and some other South-East states despite APC candidates winning some National Assembly contests in the same region.
Wike maintained that the voting pattern demonstrated that Nigerians could differentiate between candidates contesting elections on different platforms.
He also rejected suggestions that his Rainbow Coalition could confuse voters or undermine Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
According to the minister, the arrangement is intended to mobilise politicians from different political parties in support of the President and does not amount to an alternative APC structure.
APC GOVERNORS REJECT RAINBOW COALITION
The Progressive Governors Forum had earlier rejected political arrangements that could undermine APC candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
Uzodimma, speaking as chairman of the forum, said APC governors would support candidates officially presented by their party and would not participate in alliances capable of creating divided loyalties or weakening the ruling party.
The governors maintained that their commitment to Tinubu’s re-election would go alongside support for APC candidates contesting other positions.
Wike, however, said he had never approached the APC governors to join his Rainbow Coalition and maintained that his political activities were focused on mobilising support for Tinubu’s second-term bid.
The FCT minister has previously accused Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of working against him, while insisting that the disagreements would not alter his support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
