The United States has commended Nigeria’s response to recent attacks in the Middle Belt and urged the government to sustain efforts to protect communities in Plateau State, particularly Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
The US Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs made the call on Tuesday amid renewed insecurity in parts of the state.
“The United States commends Nigeria’s strong response to the latest attacks from Fulani militant groups,” the bureau said.
It added that Washington would continue working with the Nigerian government to protect Christian communities in the Middle Belt and urged authorities to maintain security efforts in Barkin Ladi.
The statement comes amid a series of attacks and reprisals in Plateau State, where recurring violence has affected several communities.
In one of the latest incidents, six people were reported killed and two others injured when gunmen attacked a mining site in Lajam Marit village, Ropp District, Barkin Ladi, on Saturday.
Security personnel responding to the incident found the victims at the site, while the injured were taken for medical treatment.
The attack occurred days after the Plateau State Government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu local government areas following renewed violence.
Plateau has experienced recurring armed attacks and communal tensions, with disputes over land and resources, criminal activity and ethnic and religious divisions among factors associated with different episodes of violence.
The latest US statement called for continued security measures to protect affected communities and prevent further attacks.
