The United States and Iran have exchanged military attacks, marking the first major escalation between the two sides in about a month after a period of reduced hostilities.
US forces carried out strikes against Iranian military positions on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz after American officials said Iranian forces were preparing rocket launches and sea mines that could threaten shipping routes in the strategic waterway.
The US Central Command described the operation as a limited and precise action aimed at preventing what it called an imminent threat from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Iran responded with missile attacks targeting US military facilities in Jordan, according to Iranian state media. Jordan’s military said it intercepted several missiles that entered its airspace.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the American strikes caused casualties among its forces and civilians, while promising further responses to what it described as US aggression.
The renewed fighting comes after weeks of relative calm following months of conflict between Washington and Tehran. The confrontation has continued to focus on Iran’s military capabilities, nuclear programme and control of the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy route.
The latest exchange has raised concerns over a possible return to wider regional conflict, with both sides maintaining opposing accounts of the events and their objectives.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a key point of tension, as disruptions in the area could affect international energy supplies and commercial shipping.
US and Iranian officials have not indicated that the latest attacks represent a full breakdown of diplomatic efforts, but the exchange marks the most significant military confrontation between the two countries since the recent reduction in fighting.
