A 22-year-old man was fatally shot by a police officer in Pennsylvania after authorities responded to a report of a possible break-in at a residence, according to officials.
The victim, identified as Glenwood Earl Pysher IV, was killed during an encounter with an Upper Pottsgrove Township police officer in the early hours of Sunday, August 23.
The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office said police were called to a home on Snyder Road at about 12:29 a.m. following a 911 report of a possible attempted break-in.
According to authorities, officers found a man behind the residence when they arrived. An encounter subsequently occurred, during which police shot Pysher.
However, Pysher’s mother, Erin Pysher, said her son had mistakenly entered the wrong backyard because he believed it belonged to a friend.
She claimed her son had been speaking with friends on the phone for about two minutes before he was shot.
The mother said her son was unarmed and posed no threat, arguing that the police response escalated unnecessarily.
“It’s a small little error that it cost him his life. It should’ve never happened,” she said.
She added that her son was not attempting to harm anyone or engage in criminal activity and questioned the level of force used by the officer.
Pysher had recently turned 22 and was preparing to return to college, according to his mother.
She said he had previously played baseball at Northampton County Community College before transferring to St. Elizabeth College in New Jersey for his final season.
Pysher was expected to continue playing baseball while studying to become a history teacher.
“He was supposed to start school and go to college. He was supposed to play baseball and live his life, and it was cut short,” his mother said.
The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
Prosecutors said they would provide further information once the investigation has been completed.
