U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to begin the process of establishing a United States Space Academy for the U.S. Space Force, NASA and the civilian spaceflight industry.
Trump announced the initiative on Friday during an event at the NASA Johnson Space Centre in Houston, where he presented the Congressional Space Medal of Honour to the crew of Artemis II.
The proposed academy is expected to train personnel for careers connected to the country’s growing space programme.
Trump compared the planned institution to established U.S. military academies, including the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
“It’s called the U.S. Space Academy,” Trump said, describing the project as an institution that would attract, train and graduate what he called the best candidates in the country.
The president said he had agreed to the creation of the academy on the condition that it would be developed to a high standard.
The administration has not yet announced where the academy will be located. Trump said a decision would be made soon, while acknowledging that Texas is among the states seeking to host the institution.
Senator Ted Cruz of Texas is reportedly lobbying for the academy to be located in the state.
Trump also said the proposed academy would have a connection to the civilian spaceflight industry, although the precise level of access or participation that private space companies would have has not yet been clarified.
The executive order marks the beginning of a process to establish the new institution, with further details on its location, structure and operations expected to be announced by the administration.
