Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division, operating under Operation UDO KA, have arrested a suspected commander of a kidnapping syndicate in Enugu State and recovered four AK-47 rifles and other ammunition.
The operation was conducted in collaboration with the Department of State Services, DSS, following intelligence on a criminal group allegedly involved in the abduction of two persons in Udi Local Government Area on August 2.
The Army said the suspect was arrested in the Gariki General Area of Enugu while allegedly attempting to flee the state.
According to the statement, intelligence obtained from an earlier arrest led troops to the suspected commander and subsequently to an arms cache concealed in Umuchingu Ujenike Forest.
Recovered from the hideout were four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines and 133 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
Troops also recovered one thousand US dollars and 785,900 naira in cash from the arrested suspect.
The Army said preliminary investigations linked the suspect to several kidnapping operations across the South-East and North-Central regions.
The suspect is currently undergoing interrogation as security agencies intensify efforts to apprehend other members and collaborators of the syndicate.
Operation UDO KA says it will sustain intelligence-led operations against criminal networks across the South-East to safeguard lives, property and legitimate economic activities.
