Troops of the Nigerian Army operating under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have ambushed members of the Lakurawa Terrorist Group in Kebbi State, recovering motorcycles, communication devices and an identity card.
The troops were conducting counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations in the state when they received intelligence about the movement of Lakurawa members through Dandi Local Government Area, according to the Army.
In a statement on Monday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Olayinka Osoba, said the troops mobilised and mounted a tactical ambush at a known crossing point near Unguwan Hassan village.
He said the troops engaged the terrorists after making contact with them, forcing the group to retreat.
“Overwhelmed by the troops’ tactical response, the militants were forced to abandon their mission and retreat in disarray,” Mr Osoba said.
The Army said troops recovered two motorcycles, mobile phones, T&T communication radios and a Nigerien identity card belonging to one of the fleeing suspects.
The identity card, according to the Army, was issued to an individual from the Tilbiri Region of the Niger Republic.
Mr Osoba said troops had intensified patrols in the area and were pursuing the fleeing terrorists.
“The troops are currently dominating the general area with aggressive patrols and are in active pursuit of the fleeing terrorists to ensure the continued safety and security of the local populace,” he said.
The operation comes amid intensified military efforts to contain terrorist and bandit groups operating across parts of Nigeria’s north-west.
The Lakurawa group has been linked to attacks and other criminal activities in parts of Kebbi and Sokoto states, with security agencies stepping up operations against the group.
