Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that the National Assembly will continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, describing the legislature as a committed partner of the administration.
Akpabio spoke after leading a delegation of federal lawmakers to President Tinubu’s residence in Lagos as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Senate President said the National Assembly believed the administration’s reforms were producing results, while maintaining that the country’s security situation was improving despite continuing challenges in some areas.

“We believe he’s doing well. These reforms are working and, as far as we are concerned, insecurities are abating, and people can sleep well,” Akpabio said.
He acknowledged what he described as “pockets of discontent” and linked some of the heightened political activity in the country to preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio also described Nigeria’s continued unity 66 years after independence as evidence of the country’s resilience, urging citizens to strengthen national cohesion despite ethnic, religious and political differences.
On relations between the executive and legislature, he said the National Assembly would continue to work with the Tinubu administration on legislation intended to support economic reforms and national development.
“On the part of the National Assembly, we want to continue to remain worthy partners to the administration of President Bola Tinubu,” he said.
Akpabio pointed to recent changes to Nigeria’s tax framework as an example of legislative cooperation with the executive, saying lawmakers had reviewed several longstanding laws considered outdated.
He said four major tax laws had been considered as part of efforts to reform the country’s fiscal system, adding that the National Assembly had worked to address concerns raised during the legislative process.

The Senate President described the legislature as a “people’s parliament” and said lawmakers would continue considering legislation and government appointments required for the implementation of public policies.
Akpabio urged Nigerians to assess the administration on the results of its policies, maintaining that the National Assembly’s responsibility was to provide the legislative framework needed to support governance and economic development.
He said lawmakers would sustain their cooperation with the executive while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
