President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, dedicated service and principled leadership.

In a statement released on Sunday, the President said his “joy knows no bounds” as the foremost Yoruba leader attained the milestone age of 100 years on May 11.

Tinubu praised Fasoranti for his contributions to education, politics, pro-democracy struggles and national development, noting that the nonagenarian had lived an exemplary life defined by discipline, honesty and commitment to noble causes.

“Pa Fasoranti has distinguished himself in all respects: in his disciplined, Spartan way of life, his belief in principles, and his commitment to noble causes. His life is a metaphor for integrity, honesty, dedicated service to the nation and true leadership,” the President stated.

The President highlighted Fasoranti’s educational achievements, including degrees obtained from the University of Ibadan, University of Hull in the United Kingdom and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.

He also acknowledged the elder statesman’s contributions to the education sector through his service as a teacher and the establishment of several schools in Ondo State.

Tinubu further recounted Fasoranti’s political journey as a disciple of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and a member of the defunct Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).

According to the President, Fasoranti served meritoriously as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983, where his integrity and financial prudence helped in managing the state’s resources.

The President described the Afenifere leader as one of the prominent voices against military dictatorship, noting that he played a significant role in the struggle for the return of democracy and the promotion of Yoruba unity and development.

Tinubu also recalled the assassination attempt on Fasoranti during the military regime of late General Sani Abacha, saying the elder statesman emerged stronger and more resilient in his fight against oppression.

The President expressed appreciation to Fasoranti for his support and prayers over the years, particularly during his presidential campaign.

“At the start of my campaign for the presidency, I visited Pa Fasoranti in Akure. Baba prayed for my electoral victory, saying he would live to witness my ascension to the presidency. God answered his prayer through my victory and eventual ascendancy to the top office,” Tinubu said.

He prayed for God to grant the elder statesman many more years in good health, while thanking him for his enduring service to Nigeria and support for the Renewed Hope Administration.
