Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has expressed condolences over the death of a schoolboy, Success Ezenwafor, following a recent flooding incident in Isiagu.
Soludo extended his sympathies to the Ezenwafor family, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School and residents of Ekwulobia community in Aguata Local Government Area over the tragedy.
The governor spoke on Sunday at the Cathedral Church of St Faith in Awka during a service commemorating Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
Soludo described the boy’s death as a painful loss and prayed for strength and comfort for his family, school and community.
He said the state government had previously reached out to the bereaved family but used the occasion to reiterate the importance of environmental responsibility as part of efforts to reduce flooding and related risks.
The governor urged residents to properly manage rainwater flowing from their compounds and avoid practices that could obstruct drainage systems.
He also called on residents to regularly clear drainage channels and plant trees as part of broader measures to protect the environment.
Soludo stressed that preventing flooding and protecting communities required cooperation between government and residents.
He urged residents to avoid dumping waste or other materials into drainage channels, warning that blocked waterways could worsen flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
The governor said the death of Ezenwafor should reinforce the need for greater attention to environmental safety and responsible management of drainage systems.
Soludo prayed for the repose of the schoolboy’s soul and urged residents to take personal responsibility for maintaining their surroundings.
He reiterated that individuals, communities and government institutions all have roles to play in reducing environmental hazards and preventing similar tragedies.
