Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday commissioned a garment factory in Ilorin, Kwara State, projected to create about 4,000 jobs when operating at full capacity.
He also inaugurated the 11-storey Kwara Revenue Service (KWRS) House as part of activities surrounding the conferment of the traditional title of Sardauna of Ilorin on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The projects were commissioned in Ilorin, the state capital, where the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, turbaned AbdulRazaq as the first holder of the Sardauna of Ilorin title, traditionally associated with the defence of the Ilorin Emirate.
Speaking at the Emir’s Palace during the ceremony, Shettima commended what he described as continuity in the AbdulRazaq family’s relationship with the Ilorin Emirate.
He recalled the contributions of the governor’s late father, AbdulGaniyu Folorunsho AbdulRazaq, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who he noted was the first lawyer from Northern Nigeria and previously held the title of Mutawalle of Ilorin.
According to the Vice President, the latest traditional honour bestowed on Governor AbdulRazaq represents another chapter in the longstanding relationship between the family and the emirate.
Shettima said the significance of traditional titles extended beyond ceremonies, arguing that they also reflected expectations about the values and responsibilities that should be passed from one generation to another.
He said AbdulRazaq’s public responsibilities had also brought him into regular engagements with the Federal Government, particularly through his position as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.
The Vice President noted that his relationship with the governor went beyond official duties, describing their interactions as involving discussions on issues affecting the federation and its constituent states.
Shettima said the National Economic Council provided a platform for federal and state governments to deliberate on economic policies, financing and implementation, with the ultimate responsibility of addressing the needs of citizens.
He also commended AbdulRazaq’s administration for projects and programmes covering education, healthcare and road infrastructure.
According to him, such investments have direct implications for residents by improving access to schools, medical services and transportation for farmers and businesses.
The Vice President urged that public infrastructure and other development gains be sustained so future generations could build on them.
The commissioning of the garment factory and KWRS House formed part of the activities marking AbdulRazaq’s turbaning as Sardauna of Ilorin.
The ceremony attracted several dignitaries, including governors of Imo, Kebbi, Plateau, Ekiti, Ogun, Niger, Bayelsa and Kaduna states.
Others in attendance included First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, represented by the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole; Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi; Emir of Zazzau, Nuhu Bamalli; and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye.
