Several players and officials of Nigeria Premier Football League side, Rivers United sustained injuries on Thursday after the club’s team bus was involved in a road accident while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for a President Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United.

The Port Harcourt-based club confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that the accident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road shortly after the team departed its camp.

According to the club, the injured players and officials suffered minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention, with no fatalities or life-threatening cases recorded.

“We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the statement read.

Rivers United assured supporters and stakeholders that the welfare of players and officials remains its top priority, adding that further information regarding the team’s travel arrangements and the scheduled Federation Cup encounter would be communicated in due course.

The accident comes days after Rivers United secured a place in the Round of 16 with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Rangers International.

The club is expected to face Nasarawa United in Awka on Saturday as it continues its pursuit of silverware in the President Federation Cup.

Having finished second in the Nigeria Premier Football League with 67 points, one point behind champions Rangers, the Federation Cup remains Rivers United’s final opportunity to secure a trophy this season.
