The Rivers State Government, through the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, has held discussions with the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM), Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, over concerns bordering on alleged violations of child rights in relation to the handling of an autistic child.
The meeting, which took place in Port Harcourt, followed concerns raised by relevant stakeholders that certain actions taken, though described as well-intentioned, did not fully comply with extant child protection laws in the state.

Present at the engagement were officials of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, as well as representatives of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State Branch. The discussions centred on the need to ensure strict adherence to legal frameworks governing the care, welfare, and protection of minors.
Authorities reiterated that while humanitarian interventions are encouraged, they must be carried out within the ambit of the law, particularly with regard to proper registration, regulatory approval, and safeguarding procedures for children.
In his response, Apostle Chinyere acknowledged the concerns raised by the government and admitted that he was not fully aware of some of the legal provisions guiding the care of minors in the state.
He, however, assured the authorities of his willingness to comply with all relevant regulations, correct identified lapses, work more closely with the Ministry to ensure future interventions meet required legal and welfare standards.

The meeting ended with a mutual understanding between both parties, with the state government emphasizing its commitment to protecting vulnerable children while also engaging faith-based and humanitarian organisations in accordance with the law.
