The Rivers State House of Assembly has constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the state government’s funding of the PAMO University of Medical Sciences (PUMS).
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on September 3 by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Enemi Alabo George.
The probe comes shortly after the Assembly approved the state’s 2026 Appropriation Bill of N1.8 trillion, which was subsequently assented to by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Before approving the budget, the Assembly removed N6 billion earmarked for scholarship funding at the medical university.
PAMO University has received financial support from the Rivers State Government since 2017, when former Governor Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, began funding the institution. The current administration under Governor Fubara continued the funding.
The Assembly said the inquiry was aimed at determining the total amount released to the university by the state government since 2017 and how the funds were utilised.
The ad hoc committee, chaired by Dumle Maol, has been directed to submit its findings to the House on or before September 30, 2026.
According to George, the committee was constituted pursuant to Section 128 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
He said the investigation would examine the state government’s financial disbursements to PUMS and determine whether the funds were applied for their intended purposes.
The committee will also establish the number and identities of beneficiaries of any scholarship scheme operated through the university.
The statement quoted George as saying the committee was expected to “unravel how much funds the University has received from the Rivers State Government since inception in 2017” and determine whether the money was properly utilised.
The Assembly said the committee would also investigate other matters relating to the state government’s financial relationship with the institution.
