Pope Leo XIV has reportedly announced plans to undergo surgery to remove a small lung nodule detected during recent medical examinations.
According to the reported announcement, the 71-year-old pontiff disclosed the development during his Sunday Angelus address at St Peter’s Square, explaining that the nodule was discovered at an early stage.
The Pope said doctors had recommended removing the nodule and that he had agreed to undergo the procedure in the coming days.

The Vatican was also reported to have indicated that the pontiff would require approximately one week of recovery following the operation.
The announcement did not establish whether the nodule was cancerous or provide further details about its nature.
Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, became the first American pope on May 8, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis.
Since assuming leadership of the Roman Catholic Church, he has addressed several international issues, including armed conflicts, humanitarian concerns and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence.

The pontiff has also repeatedly called for diplomatic efforts to resolve international conflicts, including the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
The reported medical development comes as the Pope continues to oversee the affairs of the Catholic Church and maintain his public engagements.
Further information about the planned surgery, including its timing and any adjustments to his official schedule, is expected from the Vatican.
