The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Hafsat Abubakar, over the alleged creation and circulation of a fake document claiming fintech company OPay Nigeria Limited was shutting down operations.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, said the arrest followed a petition from OPay Digital Services Limited requesting an investigation into the origin of the fraudulent notice.
Iniedu said cyber forensic analysis traced the document to an X account allegedly operated by Abubakar, who was subsequently arrested on September 4, 2026.
Police said the fabricated notice was falsely presented as an official communication from OPay and had the potential to cause public panic, financial disruption and reputational damage.
OPay had earlier dismissed the viral shutdown message as false, urging customers to rely only on its verified communication channels.
The police said investigations are ongoing, adding that anyone found responsible for spreading false information would face prosecution.
