Police detectives have arrested a former member of the House of Representatives, Uchenna Sunday Igwesi, popularly known as USA Igwesi, traditional ruler Igwe Obiora Igwesi and eight others in connection with an alleged attack on a Nigeria Democratic Congress ward meeting in Enugu State.
The arrests followed investigations into the September 12 incident at Ihuani Awkunanaw, Obuoffia, in Nkanu West Local Government Area, where armed persons allegedly disrupted an NDC ward meeting.
The other suspects were identified as Uchenna Moses Ani, also known as Odogwu; Chidi Ani; Oko Nwodo, also known as Buzuzu; Dominic Arum, also known as City Hangout; Ifeanyi Solomon Nwobodo, also known as Agege; Victor Okechukwu, also known as Ogboni; Nnabuike Ani, also known as Stone; and John Chukuma Ogbodo.
The arrests were reportedly carried out by detectives from the Zone 13 Police Command in Ukpo, Dunukofia, Anambra State, following a petition submitted to the Inspector-General of Police.
The petition, dated September 15, was written by Chief G. Tagbo Ike, SAN, on behalf of the NDC Obuoffia Ward.
The petition accused the suspects of offences including conspiracy to commit felony, unlawful possession of firearms, attempted murder, assault occasioning grievous harm, threatening violence and stealing.
The allegations remain subject to police investigation and have not been established by a court.
According to the petitioners, NDC members had gathered for their ward meeting when the incident occurred.
They said permission had been obtained from the Divisional Police Station in Agbani ahead of the gathering.
Obuoffia is the home ward of the NDC governorship candidate in Enugu State, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa.
The petition alleged that a convoy comprising three vehicles and two motorcycles passed the meeting venue shortly before the violence erupted.
It further alleged that threats were made before gunshots were heard at the gathering.
Eight NDC members were identified by the party as having sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.
They were listed as Donald Onovo, Maduka Ngene, Victor Onovo, Gloria Ogbodo, Maduabuchi Ugwu, Nelson Nnaemeka, Chinonso Nwagbara and Obinna Daniel Owo.
The Enugu State Police Command had earlier confirmed an attack on the political gathering, saying armed persons disrupted the meeting and fired shots.
Police subsequently ordered an investigation into the incident.
The NDC also alleged in its petition that similar attacks had occurred against opposition political activities in other parts of Enugu State.
It claimed that some local government officials were connected to a broader pattern of political violence.
Those wider allegations have not been independently established, and the arrest of the suspects does not amount to a finding of guilt.
Police investigations are expected to determine the individual roles, if any, of those arrested and establish the circumstances surrounding the September 12 attack.
