Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has identified negative public perceptions of the military and other security agencies as factors discouraging young Nigerians from pursuing careers in the armed forces.
Soludo observed on Friday during a memorial service held in honour of the late Lieutenant-General Chikadibia Obiakor (retd.) at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
The governor said the achievements and exemplary conduct of distinguished military officers could help change public attitudes towards military service and encourage young people to consider careers in national defence and security.

He stressed the importance of presenting positive role models whose contributions demonstrate the value of discipline, professionalism, patriotism and commitment to national development.
According to Soludo, the life and career of the late Obiakor offer important lessons for younger generations, particularly those considering opportunities in military service and international peacekeeping.
Describing the deceased as one of Anambra State’s distinguished sons, the governor praised his contributions to Nigeria’s military institutions and international peacekeeping operations.
“We have come to celebrate the life of one of our best,” Soludo said.
He described Obiakor as “Anambra’s export to Nigeria and the world”, noting that his professional achievements brought recognition to his home state and the country.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Soludo emphasised the importance of maintaining meaningful relationships with one’s community.
He urged community leaders, elders and accomplished professionals to remain connected to their roots and use their experiences to inspire younger people.
The governor maintained that professional success should not be measured solely by national or international recognition but also by the positive influence individuals have on their immediate communities.
“The impact on the community is the most important impact; his people were able to testify that he was good,” he stated.

Soludo further encouraged prominent individuals to demonstrate leadership through community engagement, mentorship and personal example.
Also speaking at the memorial, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, expressed condolences to the family of the late military officer.
Oluyede, represented by Major-General Tariweriye Gagariga, Director-General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, described Obiakor as a decorated veteran whose military service reflected professionalism, dedication and commitment to duty.
He said the late general’s contributions to the Nigerian Armed Forces and international peacekeeping missions represented a significant part of his professional legacy.
The Chief of Defence Staff joined the government and people of Anambra State in honouring Obiakor’s memory and recognising his years of service.
Earlier, the deceased’s son, Nonso Obiakor, paid tribute to his father, describing him as a disciplined and dedicated individual who placed considerable importance on service to humanity.
He highlighted his father’s commitment to peacekeeping, professional excellence and the values that guided his military career.
The memorial attracted senior military officers, government officials, community leaders, family members and other dignitaries who gathered to celebrate Obiakor’s life and contributions to Nigeria and the international community.
The event also provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of mentorship, community responsibility and the role of distinguished military personnel in encouraging future generations to embrace national service.
