Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has granted absolute pardons to 130 inmates in custodial facilities across the state and commuted the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment.
Mutfwang announced the decision on Thursday as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The governor said the exercise followed consultations with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
According to him, 130 inmates were granted absolute pardons, while four inmates serving death sentences had their sentences reduced to life imprisonment.

Mutfwang said the Independence anniversary offered Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since gaining independence in 1960, remember the sacrifices of past generations and assess the challenges and achievements recorded over the years.
He called on Nigerians to remain committed to preserving the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that building a peaceful and prosperous nation requires collective responsibility.
The governor urged citizens to rise above their differences and work towards a Nigeria where everyone has a sense of belonging and an opportunity to pursue their aspirations.
Mutfwang also acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in promoting national cohesion, peace and economic development.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a Plateau State where residents can pursue their aspirations in an atmosphere of peace, security, justice and inclusive development.
The governor commended Plateau residents for their resilience, patience and patriotism and urged them to remain committed to the Nigerian project despite the challenges confronting the country.
Mutfwang wished Nigerians at home and abroad a peaceful and meaningful 66th Independence Anniversary.
