The Osun State Government has established a joint security task force and placed security agencies on 24-hour alert following intelligence warnings of possible attacks by suspected terrorists and bandits, alongside recent violent incidents in the state.
The heightened security measures followed alerts received by authorities over possible threats to public places, including churches, mosques and schools, prompting calls for increased vigilance and stronger security around such facilities.
The security concerns came amid recent violence in Ile-Ife, where Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, was killed during unrest linked by the state government to a dispute over motor park leadership.
Governor Ademola Adeleke subsequently ordered police to investigate the killing and directed security agencies to restore order in affected areas.
Against that background, the State Security Council met to review the situation and approved the establishment of the joint task force to strengthen intelligence gathering, coordination and response to emerging threats.
The meeting was convened by Adeleke and presided over by Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, with Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura and other security commanders in attendance.
Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi said the government would provide the logistics required to strengthen security operations across the state.
SECURITY AGENCIES ON 24-HOUR ALERT
The council directed the Nigeria Police, working with other security agencies, to maintain a 24-hour alert in response to the reported threats.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant, particularly around churches, mosques and schools, while managers of such facilities were advised to strengthen security measures.
The government also called on traditional rulers to intensify security monitoring within their communities and urged residents to promptly share useful information with security agencies.
The Ministry of Justice, police and Department of State Services were directed to strengthen cooperation in the investigation and prosecution of suspects linked to security offences.
Despite the heightened measures, the State Security Council said Osun remained secure and urged residents to remain calm while cooperating with security agencies.
