The media aide to Anambra State First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, Daniel Ezeigwe, has clarified the godparent relationship between the families of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and Governor Chukwuma Soludo, saying Obi is not a godfather to any of Soludo’s children.
Ezeigwe issued the clarification on Saturday following the circulation of a video in which Obi said he and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children.
According to the statement, the actual family connection is that Nonye Soludo is the confirmation godmother to Obi’s daughter, while Obi’s wife, Margaret, is the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters.
“Mr Peter Obi is not a godfather to any of the children of Professor Chukwuma and Dr Nonye Soludo,” the statement said.
Ezeigwe also clarified that neither Obi nor Governor Soludo had served as godparent to the other’s children.
He suggested that Obi may have misspoken while describing the relationship between the two families.
“It is possible that Mr Peter Obi simply misspoke in the course of making his remarks. However, given the widespread circulation of the video and the enquiries it has generated, it is important that the record be set straight,” Ezeigwe said.
The clarification followed Obi’s remarks at the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu on Friday.
Speaking at the conference, Obi described his relationship with Soludo as cordial despite their political differences and recent public exchanges over governance and Anambra State’s finances.
“People might not know, my wife and I are godparents to Soludo’s children. Yes, we are that close. So we are not quarrelling, and we will never quarrel,” Obi said.
He added that he would continue to maintain a cordial relationship with the governor despite disagreements on political and governance issues.
Ezeigwe, however, maintained that the specific godparent claim required clarification while stressing that the relationship between the two families remained cordial.
“The relationship between the two families is cordial, and there is no need to misrepresent it in any manner,” he said.
The clarification establishes that the godparent relationship exists between the two families through their wives, rather than between Obi and Soludo themselves.
