Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed suggestions of a rift with Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, saying he has neither a dispute nor bitterness towards the governor despite their disagreement over the state’s financial records.
Obi spoke during an interview on Thursday while responding to questions about the financial position of Anambra State at the end of his tenure as governor and his relationship with Soludo.
“I don’t have any dispute, let alone being bitter, with my very respected elder brother, Governor Soludo. We remain brothers. He’s the governor of my state, and I respect him,” Obi said.
The former governor said Soludo required peace to govern Anambra effectively, adding that he had no personal dispute with any governor in Nigeria.
His comments followed renewed debate over Anambra’s finances after his administration ended in March 2014.
Obi maintained that he handed over a financially strong state with more than $150 million in funds and disputed claims that his administration left behind about $123 million in debt.
The Anambra State Government has maintained that some loan facilities associated with previous administrations remain liabilities being serviced by the state, while Obi has challenged how those obligations have been characterised.
Obi also appealed to governors to allow presidential and other political candidates to campaign freely in their states ahead of the 2027 general election.
He said governors were entitled to support candidates of their choice but should allow other candidates to campaign freely and allow voters to make their own electoral decisions.
The former Anambra governor urged political leaders to focus on the challenges confronting Nigerians rather than allow political disagreements to become personal disputes.
