Ahead of Nigeria’s January 16 presidential election, the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has met with Canada’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, to discuss the country’s democratic process and opportunities for stronger bilateral cooperation.
Obi disclosed the meeting in a post on his X account, saying it was held at the invitation of the Canadian High Commission.
According to the former Anambra State governor, the discussions focused largely on Nigeria’s forthcoming elections and Canada’s continued support for democratic development in the country.
The meeting also covered areas including trade and investment, economic development and education, as well as measures aimed at increasing the participation and representation of women in Nigerian politics.
Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said he remains convinced that a peaceful, stable and well-governed Nigeria would serve Canada’s strategic interests.
He argued that a country capable of creating opportunities for its citizens would also be better positioned to develop stronger economic and diplomatic relationships with Canada and other African countries.
“A Nigeria that works for its people will not only unlock the enormous potential of our nation but also create greater opportunities for deeper partnership between Nigeria, Canada, and the wider African continent,” Obi said.
The NDC candidate also called for greater efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions and encourage broader participation in governance.
He said every Nigerian should have a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the country’s political process, regardless of gender, background or personal circumstances.
Obi added that he expected to maintain engagement with Canadian diplomatic representatives and members of the country’s business community as both sides explore areas of cooperation capable of supporting Nigeria’s economic development and national stability.
