The Nigerian Union in South Africa has issued a security advisory urging Nigerians across the country to exercise caution and avoid areas designated for protests scheduled for September 30.
The planned nationwide demonstrations, organised by the March and March Movement, are expected to focus on undocumented foreign nationals and follow a similar action held on June 30.
In a statement signed by its President-General, Dr Smart Nwobi, NUSA advised Nigerians to avoid protest locations, remain calm and refrain from confrontations or provocative arguments.
The union also urged Nigerians to carry valid immigration documents, including passports and visas where applicable, and comply with lawful instructions from South African authorities.
Nwobi warned members of the Nigerian community against responding violently to provocation.
“No Nigerian should take the law into his own hands,” he said.
“We must not respond to provocation with violence or engage in activities capable of putting ourselves, our families or the wider Nigerian community at risk.”
NUSA said it was working with the Nigerian diplomatic mission in South Africa, including the High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate General, as well as relevant South African law-enforcement authorities, to protect Nigerians and their legitimate interests.
Nwobi called on Nigerian diplomatic officials to maintain engagement with South African authorities ahead of the demonstrations.
“We urge the Nigerian Mission not to relent in its efforts to engage the South African authorities and utilise every diplomatic means available to prevent violence,” he said.
The union also cautioned Nigerians against circulating unverified videos, photographs or social-media messages capable of causing panic.
It advised anyone facing threats or intimidation to contact the South African police and NUSA officials rather than engage in confrontation.
The advisory comes amid continuing concerns over anti-foreigner sentiment and demonstrations targeting undocumented migrants in parts of South Africa.
NUSA urged Nigerians to remain vigilant before, during and after the September 30 demonstrations and prioritise their personal safety while allowing diplomatic and law-enforcement authorities to address any security concerns.
