A Nigerian delegation led by Major General T.E. Gagariga has charged officers and soldiers serving with the Nigerian Contingent under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and conduct in the discharge of their duties.
The charge was given during an official visit to the Nigerian Contingent at Yundum Barracks, The Gambia, on July 22, 2026.
The delegation, which was in The Gambia to attend the 19th African Security Watch Conference, visited the contingent as part of efforts to assess the welfare and operational readiness of Nigerian troops serving on the regional peace support mission.
Addressing the officers and soldiers, Major General Gagariga commended them for their commitment to duty and reminded them that they represent not only the Nigerian Armed Forces but also the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He stressed that their conduct, professionalism and interactions with the people of the host nation would play a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s image and reputation in the international community.
The senior military officer urged the troops to remain disciplined, respect constituted authority and strictly adhere to the Nigerian Armed Forces’ policy on the responsible use of social media.
He further challenged officers to demonstrate accountability, integrity and exemplary leadership at all times, noting that soldiers naturally look up to their commanders for direction and inspiration.
According to him, officers must consistently exhibit character and discipline worthy of emulation to sustain the professionalism and operational effectiveness of the contingent.
Responding, the Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Y.M. Abdullahi, expressed appreciation to Major General Gagariga and members of the delegation for the visit and encouragement.
He assured the delegation that the Nigerian Contingent would remain committed to discipline, professionalism and the successful execution of its mandate under ECOMIG while continuing to uphold the honour and prestige of the Nigerian Army and Nigeria.
The visit featured a tour of the Nigerian Contingent Base Camp, where members of the delegation were briefed on operational activities and camp facilities before concluding with a group photograph.
Nigeria remains one of the leading contributors to the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia, which was established to support peace, stability and democratic governance in the West African nation.
