Nigeria’s top athletes are set to compete for honours as action begins at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
The Nigerian team will feature in three events on the opening night of the competition, including the women’s 100m hurdles, mixed 4x100m relay and women’s 400m events.
Leading the country’s charge is former world champion and sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, who will compete in the women’s 100m hurdles semi-final with hopes of advancing to the final.
The mixed 4x100m relay team will also represent Nigeria in the first medal event of the championship, where they will face hosts Hungary, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Germany and the United States.
Amusan is listed for the relay event but is expected to focus primarily on the hurdles due to the tight competition schedule.
Other members of Nigeria’s mixed relay team include Alaba Akintola, Favour Ashe, Miracle Ezechukwu, Udodi Onwuzurike and Rosemary Nwankwo.
However, Ezechukwu’s participation remains uncertain as she was still awaiting her visa clearance before travelling to Budapest.
Nigeria’s squad also includes Kanyinsola Ajayi, who will compete in the men’s 100m event. He is scheduled to feature in the second semi-final alongside strong contenders including Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs, South Africa’s Akani Simbine, American Kenneth Bednarek and Cameroon’s African champion Emmanuel Eseme.
Onwuzurike will compete in the men’s 200m event and is expected to face a tough field featuring Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo and Bednarek.
African record holder Ezekiel Nathaniel will complete Nigeria’s individual events at the championship, competing in the men’s 400m hurdles on the final day.
The Nigerian delegation is made up of a blend of established stars and emerging talents, with expectations high for strong performances at the global athletics event.
