The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an alleged sexual abuse case involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, attached to the Headquarters of 3 Division in Jos, Plateau State.
The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Victor Olukoya, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
Olukoya said the Army was aware of reports circulating online about the allegation and had taken steps to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
He said the Army treats allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness.
According to him, it would be premature to determine the culpability or otherwise of any individual while the investigation is ongoing.
The Army said it was also aware that relevant civil authorities were investigating the matter and assured that it would cooperate fully to ensure a thorough and transparent process in line with existing laws and regulations.
It reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism, due process and respect for human dignity, adding that any personnel found to have violated the law or service regulations would face appropriate sanctions after the investigation.
The Army urged the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information that could interfere with the investigation or compromise the privacy and well-being of those involved, particularly any minor.
It added that further details would be released when appropriate, subject to legal requirements and the integrity of the investigative process.
