The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reported significant progress in efforts to recover its crashed ATR 42-500 aircraft, identified as NAF 931, from a waterlogged site in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

The recovery operation entered its 14th day on Monday, October 19, with engineering teams continuing efforts to reduce the water level and stabilise the surrounding terrain.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the service disclosed that sustained pumping had substantially lowered the water level at the crash site.

According to the statement, the progress has enabled recovery personnel to concentrate on removing most of the remaining water, subject to weather conditions and other operational challenges.

The Air Force explained that engineers were also reinforcing the embankment surrounding the site with sandbags to prevent possible collapse and maintain a stable working environment.

It described the dewatering exercise as a technically demanding operation requiring continuous pumping, engineering support and careful coordination among participating agencies.

The NAF commended personnel involved in the recovery mission for their dedication and professionalism despite the difficult working conditions.

It particularly acknowledged the contribution of Hitech Construction Company, which has provided support for the ongoing engineering and recovery activities.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, also praised the recovery team for its resilience and commitment to the operation.

Aneke reaffirmed the service’s determination to complete the recovery process safely and systematically while maintaining appropriate operational standards.

The Air Force further disclosed that investigative activities were continuing alongside efforts to recover the aircraft.

It did not announce the completion of the recovery operation or provide fresh findings on the circumstances that caused the crash.

Expressing sympathy with families affected by the incident, the service acknowledged the distress surrounding the tragedy and assured them of its continued commitment to the mission.

The NAF also thanked residents of Igbokoda for their patience and cooperation, alongside partner agencies and other stakeholders supporting the operation.

It pledged to provide further verified updates as recovery efforts progress.
