The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that one of its helicopters made a precautionary landing on farmland in Makurdi, Benue State, after participating in a military operation against suspected kidnappers.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in Utur Tse-Igboji community, Bar Council Ward, along the Welfare Quarters–Mopol 13 Ring Road in Makurdi.
The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed this in a statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the landing.
According to Ejodame, the helicopter had completed a mission providing close air support to ground troops conducting an operation against suspected kidnappers in the Ogbadigbo area of Benue State, near the Enugu-Benue boundary.
He said the operation disrupted the activities of the suspected criminals and assisted ground forces in advancing through the affected area.
Following the mission, the pilot reportedly decided to make a precautionary landing approximately 10 nautical miles from the airfield.
Ejodame explained that the decision was taken in accordance with established aviation safety procedures and operational guidelines.
The Air Force confirmed that the helicopter subsequently returned safely to its base.
The statement did not disclose any mechanical fault or other specific circumstance that prompted the pilot’s decision to land.
The NAF maintained that the incident did not affect its operational commitment to supporting ground troops in ongoing security operations.
It further reaffirmed its determination to strengthen coordinated air and ground operations aimed at disrupting kidnapping activities and improving security in vulnerable communities.
The Air Force assured residents that its personnel would continue conducting operations in accordance with established safety standards while supporting efforts to protect lives and property across the country.
