A 56-year-old man in Louisiana has been charged by federal authorities for allegedly supplying the firearm used in a mass shooting that left eight children dead in Shreveport, intensifying scrutiny over how the weapon was obtained.
Federal prosecutors say Charles Ford, a Shreveport resident, was arrested and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and making false statements to investigators.
If convicted on both counts, he could face up to 20 years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana.
Authorities allege that the weapon was a semi-automatic, assault-style pistol that was ultimately used by 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, who is suspected of killing eight children on April 19. Seven of the victims were reportedly his own children, while the eighth was identified as a nephew. Two women were also wounded in the attack and remain hospitalised.
Elkins later died following a police pursuit, preventing him from facing trial.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney, Zachary A. Keller described the case as “beyond comprehension,” underscoring the profound impact on the local community.
Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), working alongside Shreveport police, traced the firearm through its purchase history. According to a criminal complaint, the gun was originally bought by a woman who later transferred it to Ford.
Prosecutors say Ford, who has a prior felony conviction prohibiting him from legally possessing firearms, initially denied ever having the weapon when questioned by federal agents. He later admitted to possessing it and told investigators he believed Elkins had taken it from him.
“While Elkins will never face justice, our efforts now turn to holding accountable those who enabled the crime,” Keller said, expressing hope that the prosecution may provide some measure of relief to a grieving community.
The case highlights ongoing concerns over illegal firearm transfers and enforcement gaps, particularly involving individuals barred from owning weapons. Federal authorities say the investigation remains active as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Shreveport community has been left in mourning, with families and residents grappling with the scale of the tragedy and its lasting aftermath.
