The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has announced plans to screen 3,181 aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections as part of preparations for the emergence of candidates for various elective offices.

According to the party, the aspirants comprise 2,122 seeking seats in State Houses of Assembly, 748 contesting for the House of Representatives, 198 senatorial hopefuls, 112 governorship aspirants, and one presidential aspirant.

The development was disclosed in a statement posted on the party’s X handle, where it also announced the constitution of screening committees and appeal panels for the exercise.

The statement said the move followed the approved timetable and schedule of activities adopted by the party’s National Executive Committee during its 104th meeting.

It added that the exercise was in line with the party’s electoral guidelines and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The party stated that the nationwide screening exercise is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The latest development comes amid a prolonged leadership crisis within the PDP, which has remained divided between the faction loyal to Governor Makinde and another group aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The Makinde-backed bloc had earlier constituted a 13-member Interim National Working Committee headed by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and has continued with activities including the sale of nomination forms and preparations for the 2027 elections.

However, the Wike-aligned camp has reportedly rejected the moves, describing them as unauthorised.

Governor Makinde has also declared his intention to contest for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
