A 63-year-old man, David Omolola, has been arraigned before a Lagos court and remanded in police custody over allegations of threatening the life of his late son’s widow, Tosin Omolola, amid a dispute over the deceased’s property.
The case, which has attracted public attention, stems from a disagreement that reportedly began about eight days after the death of Tosin’s husband, Hammed Omolola.
According to court documents, the defendant is facing three counts bordering on conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, alleged threats to kill his daughter-in-law and her children, and assault.
The charges, filed by the Lagos State Police Command, allege that David Omolola threatened the widow during an altercation at their residence in Ikorodu and later assaulted her.
The matter gained widespread attention after the 28-year-old widow posted a video on social media alleging that members of her late husband’s family were attempting to dispossess her and her two children of their home and other property.
Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who publicised the case, said the intervention of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) helped ensure that the matter was brought before the court.
He alleged that the dispute centred on the late Hammed Omolola’s house, vehicle and other assets, adding that he would continue to monitor the proceedings while refraining from comments that could prejudice the ongoing trial.
The court has remanded the defendant in police custody pending the perfection of his bail.
