British heavyweight rivals Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are set to finally meet in the ring on December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, ending years of negotiations and speculation over one of British boxing’s most anticipated contests.
The showdown brings together two of Britain’s biggest heavyweight names after both fighters returned to winning ways in separate bouts in July.
Fury, 37, stopped Polish heavyweight Mariusz Wach in the seventh round of their contest in Pattaya, Thailand.
Joshua, 36, recovered from being knocked down twice in the opening round to stop Albania’s Kristian Prenga in the second round of their bout in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Cardiff contest will be Joshua’s second fight since surviving a car crash in Nigeria in which his close friends Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele died.
Joshua and promoter Eddie Hearn had previously expressed a preference for staging the Fury fight at Wembley Stadium.
However, Cardiff’s Principality Stadium has emerged as the venue for the December 11 all-British heavyweight showdown.
Hearn has described the contest as a defining moment in Joshua’s career, saying after Pat Brown’s victory over John Hedges on September 19 that Joshua’s “whole career comes down to this” fight.
“There is a desperation to win this fight, and this is why sport is the greatest. I’ve never wanted to win a fight so badly,” Hearn said.
Joshua and Fury have been linked with a potential fight for several years, with previous negotiations repeatedly failing to produce a contest.
Their December meeting is now set to bring the two former heavyweight world champions together in the ring for the first time.
