The Israeli military has said it destroyed an underground Hezbollah facility at the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, claiming the operation eliminated a major network used by the armed group for military activities.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement that Israeli forces would remain in the area to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its presence and capabilities.
The Ali al-Taher ridge, located about 15 kilometres from the Israeli border, has been a major flashpoint in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah due to its strategic position overlooking parts of southern Lebanon and northern Israel.
The Israeli military said it had established operational control of the area both above and below ground before dismantling the underground infrastructure, which it claimed stretched for more than two kilometres.
According to the military, the facility contained rockets, missiles, drones, anti-tank weapons, mines and explosive devices. It also said a command complex belonging to Hezbollah’s Badr unit was located inside the underground network, with command rooms, weapons storage areas and living quarters.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that Israeli forces carried out a powerful explosion at the ridge, with the impact felt across Nabatieh and surrounding areas in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah has not issued a response to the latest Israeli claims.
The development comes despite a ceasefire agreement reached in June, following months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The truce framework, backed by the United States, called for Israeli forces to gradually withdraw from southern Lebanon while Lebanese forces moved to disarm Hezbollah.
However, the process has stalled, with Hezbollah refusing to surrender its weapons and Israel maintaining that it will not withdraw until the group is disarmed.
Israel has continued military operations in southern Lebanon, saying it needs to maintain a buffer zone to prevent Hezbollah from restoring its military infrastructure near the border.
