The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured parents of enhanced security for children in schools across Nigeria as the Police Community Relations Committee launched its Safe School Initiative.
Disu gave the assurance on Thursday in Abuja, where the programme was formally unveiled alongside the mobilisation of 10,000 volunteers and the deployment of CCTV surveillance cameras to schools.
Representing the Inspector-General at the event, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, said the Nigeria Police Force had assumed responsibility for strengthening security around schools nationwide.
According to Disu, the police have established internal warning and response mechanisms designed to enable schools to quickly alert security authorities whenever threats emerge.
The initiative comes amid security concerns over the vulnerability of schools and other public places to attacks by criminal and terrorist groups, according to the police.
Speaking on the programme, the National Chairman of the PCRC, Alhaji Mogaji Ibraheem Olaniyan, said the initiative was designed to deepen community participation in school security.
Olaniyan said Disu had directed the committee to move beyond supporting police formations and become more actively involved in protecting communities.
He said 10,000 PCRC volunteers would be deployed nationwide to work with the police, community leaders, vigilante groups and other stakeholders.
The programme will give particular attention to schools in rural and remote communities considered vulnerable to attacks, the PCRC chairman said.
Olaniyan also disclosed that CCTV cameras had begun to be deployed, with the national PCRC providing three cameras for schools in the Federal Capital Territory. The FCT chapter is expected to provide three additional cameras.
He said the aim was to expand surveillance coverage across the six area councils in the FCT before extending the initiative to other parts of the country.
The PCRC chairman appealed to individuals and organisations to support the programme with CCTV cameras and other resources needed to improve security around schools.
He said the surveillance system would help security agencies monitor activities around school premises and detect suspicious movements, including when schools were not in session.
Beyond physical security, Olaniyan said the initiative would also focus on protecting teachers and addressing social vices among young people through sustained engagement with pupils and students.
He added that the committee planned to connect schools with former students who had become professionals, including lawyers and judges, to serve as mentors and role models.
The PCRC also said it had commenced consultations with community leaders, vigilante groups and other stakeholders ahead of the resumption of schools.
The development follows an earlier police security alert warning of possible attacks on schools, places of worship, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations.
According to the police, intelligence indicated possible mobilisation of terrorist elements for coordinated attacks, with suspected operatives conducting surveillance of potential targets.
The Safe School Initiative is expected to strengthen collaboration between the police and communities in preventing threats and improving security around educational institutions nationwide.
