Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has inaugurated the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC), charging the newly constituted body to transform the state’s power sector and deliver improved electricity supply within the next 18 months.

Speaking during the inauguration of the five-member commission at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo, on Thursday, Governor Eno said the establishment of AKSERC marked a major step in the state’s efforts to achieve energy security, industrial growth and sustainable economic development.

“As a listening government, we feel the pains our people are going through with inadequate supply of electricity, and we have taken concrete steps to address the issue,” the governor said.

He expressed optimism that residents would soon experience significant improvements in electricity supply, noting that the state had adopted a strategic electricity reform roadmap following the Akwa Ibom Electricity Summit held in September 2025.

Eno explained that AKSERC would serve as the sole regulator of electricity business and market activities within the state in line with the Electricity Act 2023 and the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Law 2025.

He directed the commission to work closely with relevant federal agencies to secure the transfer of the state’s full regulatory powers over electricity and engage the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) and other stakeholders on plans to establish a state-owned electricity distribution company.

The governor also tasked the commission with developing a programme tracker to monitor the implementation of its operational plans and approved budget.

According to him, the commission’s establishment is aimed at creating a competitive electricity market capable of attracting investment, improving service delivery and protecting consumer interests.

Eno attributed the development partly to reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu through the Electricity Act 2023, which granted states greater authority over electricity regulation and market development.

The governor inaugurated Mrs Arit Uya as Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of AKSERC, alongside Dr Kalu Ukoha as Vice Chairman and Commissioner for Policy, Planning and Innovation.

Other members of the commission are Engr. Ubong Etukudoh, Commissioner for Engineering Services; Dr Valerie Obot, Commissioner for Finance and Corporate Support; and Mr Paul Okon, Commissioner for Economic Regulation.

Responding on behalf of the commissioners, Mrs Uya pledged to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, integrity and accountability, assuring residents that the commission would work diligently to achieve the government’s electricity transformation agenda.

Governor Eno also disclosed that the state had incorporated Ibom Electricity Holding Limited (IEHL) to manage electricity assets and investments and had commenced the regularisation of its shareholding interests in 4Power Consortium Limited and PHEDC as part of preparations for a dedicated Akwa Ibom electricity distribution subsidiary.
