Rivers State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, has assured residents of Eneka community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of sustained government intervention to address flooding in the area.

Odu gave the assurance during an inspection of flood-affected communities in Eneka, where she assessed the situation and interacted with residents over challenges caused by the flooding.

The Deputy Governor said Governor Siminalayi Fubara was concerned about the situation and had directed the committee to take immediate steps to address the needs of affected residents.

She said the state government would combine immediate assistance to affected families with longer-term interventions aimed at addressing factors contributing to flooding in the communities.

During the inspection, residents of New Jerusalem Estate in Eneka told the committee that water had allegedly been wrongly re-channelled into their area, causing runoff from surrounding locations to flow into the estate.

The residents said the situation had contributed to the flooding of several buildings and disrupted the lives of families living in the area.

Responding to their concerns, Odu said the committee would document its findings and present a report to Governor Fubara for further action.

She said the Ministry of Works would subsequently engage with the affected communities and the management of the estate to examine the drainage system and determine measures required to restore the appropriate water channels.

The Deputy Governor disclosed that immediate palliatives would be provided to families affected by the flooding to cushion the impact of the situation.

Odu also directed officials to compile the names of affected families as part of the government’s assessment.

She said proper documentation was necessary to establish the scale of the flooding and enable the government to determine what additional assistance would be required.

The Deputy Governor stressed the importance of obtaining accurate information from affected communities, saying interventions should be based on the actual number of households and residents affected.

She assured residents that the government would continue monitoring flood-prone communities and working with relevant ministries and stakeholders to address emerging challenges.

Odu also urged residents to cooperate with government officials and provide information that could assist authorities in determining the causes of flooding and developing appropriate solutions.

Responding to the visit, a resident of New Jerusalem Estate, Engr. Obinna Okoro, commended Governor Fubara for the government’s response to the flooding.

Okoro expressed appreciation for the deployment of the committee to inspect the affected areas and engage directly with residents.

The inspection forms part of ongoing activities of the Rivers State Flood Prevention and Management Committee as the government responds to flooding in communities across the state.
